From an evolutionary perspective, we are the pinnacle of the ape species. Yet we have terraformed our environment with so much protective padding that we no longer need to take advantage of our unique physicality to continue our reign at the top of the food chain.

Our ancestors lived in harmony with nature. Death was usually caused by an event or food shortage, rather than disease. Research by Gurven & Kaplan found that if hunter-gatherers survived past the age of 15, they would more than likely live until the ripe old age of 72.

Over the last 40 years, metabolic syndrome has increased in the USA by 35%. In New Zealand, 1 in 3 New Zealanders are obese. While it is known that improvements in exercise & diet are the solution, each year, more & more New Zealanders make ACC claims for fitness related injuries & each year we consume more “food-like substances” than our grandparents did in their lifetimes!

For all our advances in technology, collectively, we are the fattest, sickest, most depressed, most sleep deprived, most stressed, most malnourished, most dehydrated, most disconnected humans that have ever existed.
